Some things have not been very surpising : like South Africa and Italy are not very good at playing baseball. Team USA is far from invincible, and I for one find myself rooting against Team USA for one simple reason: Too many goddamned Yankees. I find it difficult rooting for a team with A-Rod, Jeter, Johnny Damon and Clemens. Granted, the latter two are brand-new and departed Yankees respectively, but, it's a little too much Team Bronx for me.

But, that in and of itself doesn't make me hate the World Baseball Classic. No, it makes me hate Team USA. No, the fact that Little League World Series rules are being applied is plenty of reason to hate this whole thing. The fact that the games can end in a tie after fourteen innings and that the Mercy Rule is in place. Now, I understand the thinking of not wearing out your pitchers before the season even begins. But, that kind of thinking makes the case for why this thing is so stupid. You can't baby your players and in the same breath tell us how this whole mess actually means something.

10 Things I Have About You...

...and the "YOU" in question refers to the dreaded World Baseball Classic. I'll try and keep these succinct and to the point and welcome you to comment on any additional things that YOU hate about the World Baseball Classic. We'll be updating this list throughout the tournament.

TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

10) Because it's SUCH a bad idea, I'm forced to agree with George Steinbrenner on something.
9) Ticket prices and availibility don't reflect spring training games.
(Tickets for the championship round at Petco Park in San Diego sold out almost immediately and are as high as $70).
8) The WBC Bracket at mlb.com just reminds you that baseball has taken a back-seat to even college basketball.
7) With games airing on ESPN2, where will I get my fill of professional lumberjacking?
6) As much as I don't want to, I know I'll watch the whole stupid thing, meaning there'll now be eight months out of the year where I ignore my girlfriend.
5)I'm from a country who couldn't do any better than Jake Peavy for a fourth starter.
4) The logo makes it seem like this is one big international gay pride parade
(which is only fitting now that A-Rod is involved).
3) The tournament makes Bud Selig happy.
2) Season-ending injuries sustained in unimportant games before opening day (This is a placeholder for all the names sure to be added).
1) Mike Piazza will be playing for Italy.

The one thing that I WILL like is the entierly expected moment where the entire Cuban team defects, but, that's only minorly entertaining, since we all know it will happen...

The NY Mets are America's Team...

...granted, it's Latin America's Team.
